Duration: 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2023
Problem identification and project objectives:
Irrigation water for table and raisin grape vineyards is a scarce, but essential resource. In addition to this, agriculture has to compete with urban and industrial needs for water. If periodic droughts occur. or if climate change reduces rainfall, it could also reduce irrigation water allocations substantially. Although information on table and raisin grape irrigation is available in published scientific and semi-popular articles, not all of the available information is yet in the public domain. If all this information could be consolidated into a single document, it would be very useful and of great value to producers, industry advisors and students. Given that in the near future there will be a loss of experience in the table and raisin grape irrigation expertise due to the retirement of researchers, a book would create the opportunity to capture that knowledge for future generations. In light of the above-mentioned, a comprehensive book for irrigation of table and raisin grapes will provide a thorough perspective on irrigation management, not only in South Africa, but also at the international level.
