More than 300 delegates from across the South African table grape value chain gathered at Allée Bleue Estate in Franschhoek on 5 and 6 August for the 2026 South African Table Grape Conference, jointly hosted by the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) and the South African Society for Enology and Viticulture (SASEV).
Held under the theme “Connecting Ideas | Cultivating Success”, the conference brought together producers, researchers, industry organisations, technical specialists and commercial partners to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry’s future.
Over two days, delegates engaged with more than 30 research presentations, keynote addresses and panel discussions covering post-harvest management, crop protection, water management, plant health, sustainability, innovation, talent development and overhead plastic protection.
Several common themes emerged. Collaboration was identified as essential to addressing increasingly complex industry challenges, with speakers emphasising stronger partnerships between producers, researchers, universities, industry organisations and commercial partners. Research, meanwhile, should remain closely connected to grower needs and translate into practical, on-farm solutions.
Innovation and technology were also central themes. From artificial intelligence, precision agriculture and biological crop protection to improved irrigation monitoring and overhead plastic systems, delegates explored how new technologies can strengthen resilience and production efficiency. At the same time, speakers stressed that innovation should complement, rather than replace, strong production fundamentals.
Climate resilience featured prominently, particularly in discussions around water security, changing weather patterns and post-harvest management. Efficient irrigation, healthy soils and root systems, careful vineyard management and improved handling practices remain fundamental to maintaining fruit quality and market performance.
The conference also highlighted the importance of investing in people. Developing the next generation of industry professionals will require stronger links between education and industry, together with practical experience, mentorship, technical skills, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning.
The discussions reinforced that South Africa’s table grape industry operates in an increasingly complex environment, but also demonstrated the depth of expertise, innovation and commitment within the value chain.
